The Origin of Enamel Art
Falang?also called “Fulang”?“Falan” and cloisonné?is a transliteration of foreign word. The word “Falang” is originated from the name of ancient Western Region Fu Lin during the Chinese Sui and Tang Dynasties. At that time, the enamel inlay glaze crafts made in the Eastern Roman Empire and the West Asia to the Mediterranean coast were called “Fulinqian”?“Fulangqian”and “Fulangji”?and we call it “Fulin” as simplified. After the presence of cloisonné, the pronunciation turned to be “lan”, at last it is called as Enamel. From 1918 to 1956, enamel and porcelain meant the same stuff. China enacted the standards of enamel products in the year of 1956. And since then enamel became the synonym of artistic porcelain.
In ancient China, since enamel products were originated from the Big Food Country (it was China’s general term for Arabic countries during Tang and Song Dynasties originated from the transliteration of Persian Tazi which was applied to call Arabians). Abbasids(661-749), with its capital in Damascus?Syria?was said to be the Umayyad Dynasty. There was also Black Big Food(749-1158) existed, and it was called as Abbasid Dynasty with Baghdad as its capital. 910 years later enamel products were introduced from Fatimid Dynasty with Cairo as its capital and Abbasid Dynasty which was followed by Seljuk Dynasty (1158-1258). Therefore, there was a parlance called “Dashi Kiln, Ghost Country Kiln”. Later on, the spellings were different due to the none-uniformed translation, such as “Fulangqian”, “Guiguoqian”, “Falan”, “Falang”, “Fulin”, “Folang” and “Fulang”. However, thanks to the basically same pronunciation, we call it “enamel” in general.
