5 Tips For Teaching The Alphabet
Teaching the alphabet to your kids doesn't have to be hard if your children enjoy the learning process. When kids want to learn, learning is not a chore, it's a pleasure. So, how can you teach your kids the alphabet in a way that's fun? Luckily there are many strategies you can use to introduce the alphabet and letter sounds to children. Here are 5 tips that you can try with your own kids.
Start With One Letter At A Time
Don't overwhelm your child by trying to teach them the whole alphabet at once. Introduce one letter, work on the sound of that letter, and get them to recognize that letter in words. You can start with A and work your way to Z or work on the letters of your child's name before moving on to other letters.
Point Out Beginning Letters
When you are with your toddler or preschool child, point out words that are around you in your environment, like on signs, cereal boxes, clothes, or anything with words. Point to the first letter and tell your child the name of the letter. Have your child repeat the letter back to you. After pointing out the letter a few times to your child, have the child find the letter somewhere and point it out to you. Make it a game and make a fuss over the child every time he/she finds the letter. You can even have letter theme days with your kids. The whole day can be focused on a letter and have fun coming up with ideas for each letter.
Stay Positive
Never be negative and discourage your child if they make a mistake. If your child makes a mistake just tell them that it was a good try and correct the mistake. Show them the correct letter and then spend some time reinforcing the correction. Again, make a fuss over the times your child gets it right.
Play An Alphabet Game
No two children are the same, so their interest in games will be different. Find a game that your child finds fun and play it fairly regularly. One idea is to introduce one letter for the game. Point it out a few times and make the sound of the letter with your child. Then have the child go around the house and collect 10 things with the letter on it and/or things that start with the sound. Once the child is finished, sit down with them and have them point to the letters on the collected items or which objects start with the sound of the letter.
Another game idea is to teach your child the sound of the letter and then have your child say as many words as they can think of that start with that letter. You can write down all the words your child says and then make a fuss about all the word your child knows. You can them have them point out all the instances of the letter in the words you've written down. The words might not only start with the letter you're working on, it may appear in several other places in the list of words.
Practice On Paper
Children don't only need to recognize and sound out letters, but they also need to learn to print the letters of the alphabet. You can do this on your own by just printing a sample of a letter and have your child copy it. However, some children need a little extra help in forming the letters and really benefit from tracing over letters several times before trying to do it without a template. Luckily, there are lots of resources online where you can print these letter tracing templates. If your child starts to get frustrated, then take a break. You want them to have fun learning and be supportive of the whole journey.

what is the correct pronunciation of the greek alphabet letter beta?
i know how the americans say it is this correct? i really need an answer as my friends are calling me a yank lover (not that there is anything wrong with the americans) only i reckon that the greeks pronounced it bayta too, not beeta like my crazy friends say. help

The American way to say it it Bayta, the English way is Beeta or Bayta depending on where you are from.
The actual pronunciation is Beh-Ta.
Ancient Greek letter beta was pronounced as [b] (as in English bit) probably until the 2nd century CE. Its pronunciation started shifting to fricative [v] in various places at different times. Evidence for this comes from the following:
Cratinus (5th c. BC), in a surviving fragment of comedy (in Dionysalexandros) states the following: "o d' hliqios wsper probaton bh bh legwn badizei" (and the fool goes about like a sheep saying "ba ba"). If beta is pronounced as [b] and eta as long [e], we get the sound attributed to the animal by contemporary Greeks ("beeh-beeh"). If the letters are pronounced as in Modern Greek, we get "vi-vi", which does not sound like a sheep at all, by any stretch of the imagination.
Aristophanes (ca. 450 - ca. 388 BC), in a similar fashion says: "quein me mellei kai keleuei bh legein" (he is going to sacrifice me and tells me to say "ba"). He also uses the presumably alliterative phrase "pinein kai binein", which would be alliterative only if both initial letters (pi and beta) were of the same type, i.e., plosive (beta pronounced as fricative [v] would not work in this case).
Cicero (106 - 43 BC), identifies the pronunciation of "binei~" with that of the Latin bini.
Greek words containing the letter beta were transliterated to Latin using the letter b (Boeotia, Euboea, basis), although the fricative sound [v] existed in Latin (as consonantal u), and should have been chosen if beta had a fricative pronunciation.
Letters pi, beta, and phi, were called labial consonants by ancient Greek grammarians (and are still learned under this label in Greek elementary schools). Of these three, however, only pi is a true labial sound in Modern Greek, while beta and phi are labiodental. The term labial is accurate if beta was pronounced as [b], and phi as [ph] (aspirated [p]).
Greek grammarians (e.g., Dionysius Thrax) divide consonants into two primary categories: the aphona (beta, gamma, delta, kappa, pi, tau, theta, phi, and chi), and the hemiphona (zeta, ksi, psi, lambda, mu, nu, rho, sigma). In Aristotle's Poetics (1456b) the aphona (of which beta is a member) are described as "having contact" (= "meta prosboles"), but not being pronounceable without a vowel. In modern parlance we would say that aphona are the plosives, pronounced instantaneously, while hemiphona are fricatives, and those other consonants that can be pronounced continuously, without the need for a following vowel. If beta were fricative, it would be classified as one of the hemiphona.
